“What is RISE really about”
As persons with disabilities, we face many challenges dealing with the day-to-day world.
We know frustration, loneliness, and a sense of powerlessness. We know we have more to contribute than many people realize. We also know the triumph that comes from overcoming barriers and taking greater charge of our lives.
“What is Independent Living”
True independent living means participating fully in the life of our community without barriers. It requires all of us to take our responsibilities and rights seriously. It requires all of us to make choices and follow them through.
Our Mission Statement
To assist adults in attaining and maintaining their own unique independent living goals, and to promote and encourage citizenship of persons with disabilities in Parry Sound/Muskoka.
The 4 CORE Programs of RISE:
Research
To identify and respond to the unmet needs of people with disabilities, to work with government, businesses, and the community through research and demonstration projects to provide the necessary services and solutions.
Information
To provide relevant information to consumers, and the general public about services, programs, products support and issues.
To facilitate referrals for individuals to community programs and agencies if requested.
Support
To provide the opportunity for consumers to exchange ideas, experiences and concerns.
To promote, through mutual and group support, a comfortable atmosphere for learning new skills.
To offer a forum for sharing problem-solving techniques and creating solutions to overcome barriers.
Empowerment
To provide self-management skills-development, giving individuals the necessary tools to act and speak on their own behalf.
